SSD toolbox BSOD when open with Intel 600p Drive

$

Hi. I have an Asus Q270M-QSM motherboard with an i7 7700 CPU, an Intel 600p NVMe drive and two SATA RAID 1 drives being managed by RST.

Each time I open up intel SSD Toolbox I see the graphic, it starts making a pie chart like it is suppose to and then I will get Different BSOD error messages.

if I open up Intel RST I do not get any issues. i first started noticing something going on with this when I was running the Intel SSU utility to gather information and it would BSOD whenever it went to collect information for storage. If I left it unchecked it would not BSOD. As I have narrowed it down to when I open SSD Toolbox I don't know if it is a problem with my NMVe or is this a known issue with version 3.4.9?

Thanks,

Lifetime of Intel 535 SSD 120GB

Hello,

I would like to ask a question about the lifetime of my Intel SSD 535 which is 120GB large in space. I bought my SSD in 2015 in May. I installed Windows 7 just once and then I just updated it from Win7 to Win10 within the free update offer. I have read some recommendations how to work with SSD disks etc. I use this disk only for OS and some programs. At the beginning I used to store the temp files (temp files from chrome or firefox) on my second hard drive. Nowadays I do not do that. I have used the SSD tool from Intel from the beginning what I am using the disk. After one year I have written an email to eshop where I bought that disk with question if it is normal that lifetime of my SSD decreased by 10 percent within one year. I was told that it is normal. I am trying to maintain as much free space on disk as it possible. As you can see it is aproximately 75 percent. I am using this SSD in my laptop max 6-7 hours per day.

My question is simple. Is it really normal that after 2,5 years lifetime of my SSD decrerased nearly by 30 percent? What can I expect if the estimated lifetime will decrease to absolute zero?

Intel SSD Firmware - NVidia GPU Cannot Display issdfut 2.2.3 GUI - WORKAROUND

$

Hi, everyone.

I write to discuss a problem with Intel's bootable SSD Firmware update, and to share my workaround.

Terms

issdfut - This is the name of Intel's Linux binary which updates firmware on SSD devices.

Poky - Poky, for the sake of this post only, is the Linux image used by Intel to enable firmware updates using issdfut. (Poky is actually a neat offering from Yocto for a roll-your-own embedded Linux. Intel chose well to apply it for booting a firmware update engine.)

Challenge

The Poky utility, as of Intel's version 2.2.3, fails to graphically render the issdfut user interface when NVidia 1080GTX GPU is present, causing Poky to boot to a blank and mostly unresponsive screen, unable to perform SSD firmware updates. If you have a NVidia GPU like mine, Intel's bootable SSD firmware update may not work for you without some tinkering.

My Workaround

Modify the boot command to include vga=ask for the graphical install option offered at boot. Choose native resolution (I chose mode 34D, but you'll see a list to choose from.)

When Poky boots this time, it sets the framebuffer resolution per vga=ask response, and successfully creates /dev/fb0 device. This changes the behavior of the Xorg detection, causing issdfut to load and flash successfully. Yay!

(Without vga=ask, the kernel never creates the framebuffer, and only creates the virtual device fbcon. When Xorg detects its settings to use and fbcon is the only option, you may lose your screen completely when Xorg starts. I did.)

Other Information

My workaround is incomplete. Though the task is solved, a full understanding of the problem evades me. Here are some ideas for doing your own digging:

  • The boot loader permits interruption with Tab. Press tab at the boot menu, then append linux 3 to the end of the boot command. This boots to non-graphical runlevel, letting you login to look around.
  • Root has no password and is granted auto-login, but only on tty1.
  • Poky's /etc/inittab is only setup for one getty, but you can add more, enabling them without reboot via init -t1 q
  • Most of the OS tools (network) are gutted, but you can mount other filesystems while booted to Intel's Poky RAM disk.
  • Even when the tty screen goes dark, it is still responsive.
    • It responds to ctrl-alt-bksp, but the display never comes back to you. (Loading Poky's Xorg kills the display, killing Xorg leaves you with a dead display.)
  • Backup plans in case I had to give up on Poky due to framebuffer/fbcon issues:
      • Build my own i686 and Xorg environment native on my system with the SSD, and dig issdfut out of the Poky ISO provided by Intel to run manually.
      • Build a 2.2 Poky reference, exactly like Intel's, and compile a few more Xorg drivers in. (I think Nouveau works with fbcon, but don't quote me on that.. it's voodoo. )
        • Instead of Xorg, I could also build a friendlier kernel and try booting that in Intel's Poky image.
      • Thankfully, I didn't have to do any of this. Wrote it here, though, in case it helps someone else struggling with this.

I feel so fortunate to have accidentally accomplished my firmware update. I hope this helps someone else do the same, and I also hope to one day fully understand the interoperability of framebuffer, framebuffer console, and Xorg. Doubly so when Nvidia is present; using NVidia devices on Linux can be a real chore given the state of framebuffer console behavior.

Cheers.

Unable to configure Intel Nvme in RAID mode on AMD ryzen platfrom

Hi ,

We are using AMD ryzen platfroms for NVME RAID solution on AMD platfroms. We are unable to configure intel Nvme's as RAID arrays.

Intel Nvme is always in offline state when raid enabled on AMD platfrom.

Please help us in understanding on how to configure intel Nvme in RAID mode.

able to detect the intel nvme as pure Nvme device in non-raid mode.

this issue not observed with samsung, toshiba, kingston nvme devices.

Also no issues with intel SATA SDD's in RAID mode.

Does intel Nvme work only on Intel platform in raid mode?

i have purchased 4 intel devices and unale to use on AMD platfroms due to not support.

Optane 900p not showing in windows 10

I have installed the drive per instructions and downloaded the NVMe driver.  The SSD shows under device controllers as Optane 900p and in storage drives as NVMe Intel SSDPED1D28.  The SSD toolbox recognizes the drive and it is listed in BIOS as a bootable device (even though I will not use it for one).  However, the drive does not show up in This PC under Devices and Drives.  I can not access it.

I do see this in the events tab of the NVMe Intel SSDPED1D28:

Intel ssd migration tool "hangs" at reboot

$

I have a NUC7I3 with windows 10 on a 40G intel ssd. Needless to say, the original ssd has run out of storage. I have purchased a non - intel 128G ssd and am trying to use the intel ssd migration software to clone the original ssd onto the larger one.

The software installs and runs ok until I reboot as instructed.  It briefly reports that it is restarting, but then the "getting windows ready, do not turn your computer off" message starts and stays on for literally hours. Eventually it gives up and shuts down.  The software manual has some extremely vague reference to interrupting the boot process for windows 10 pcs to allow the cloning software to run, but not enough info for me at least.

The 40G ssd is inside the NUC and the 128G ssd is on a usb adapter.

Any suggestions?

about 900p optane power

480GB 900p maxes at around 16w, with intel specification 12v thats around 1.333Amps. if I do 5v then to get 16w will need 3.2Amps.. i believe SATA power comes with 4.5amps in total.  i plan to get a sata to SAS power adapter.

taking a look at samsung 950 pro 1TB it can use upwards 9w during high queue depth workloads and it runs on a 3.3voltage. would 900p run if its supplied with 5v?  if so will there be issue? please answer as I really want to know before I buy one.

Optane 900P with AHCI or Intel RST in BIOS?

$

I'm using the PCIe slot card version of the Optane 900P as the OS and boot drive and two conventional hard drives for storage (not in RAID config),  with a 8700k and an Asus Rog Maximus X Hero motherboard.

In the bios, I have two options for SATA Mode selection :

- AHCI

- Intel RST Premium With Intel Optane System Acceleration (RAID)

Is there any performance difference between the two? When I installed the OS (Win 10) it was set up on default setting AHCI, could I still switch to RST if that offers tangible performance benefits, or would I have to wipe the Optane and install Windows anew?

I've noticed that the Computerbase Benchmark with AS SSD produces a vastly better performance for 4k-64Thrd read score:

7-1080.2000715980.png

This is how my Optane does in comparison:

as-ssd-bench INTEL SSDPED1D48 04.01.2018 02-10-29.png

Strangely, the write score is better on my Optane, but overall score is still significantly lower. Of course the Computerbase benchmark did bench the Optane as a secondary drive, not as the OS drive, so that might figure in.

The other benchmark graphic of the AS SSD benchmark mentions "Ram Caching!", so I assume that has something to do with the vastly improved read performance? How do I enable that - or should I? What are the benefits?

Another AS SSD benchmark on SSD Reviews shows a benchmark very similar to mine, just a tad bit faster in every  score though:

Intel-Optane-P900-480GB-SSD-AS-SSD-Bench-Intel-Dvr.png

Finally, the Computerbase CrystalDiskMark score on the empty Optane

12-1080.2913866512.png

performs better in every category, but way worse than mine in 4KiB Q8T8.

Bottom line: Did I miss a setting to improve performance in either BIOS or Win10? Can - and should I switch from AHCI to RST in the Bios, given that I use the 900P as a systems drive and two hdds not in raid as storage?

About Intel PMEP (Persistent Memory Emulator Platform)

Hello,

This is Qianqian Yu, a master student from Institute of Parallel and Distributed Systems (IPADS), Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China.

I would like to emulate NVM with DRAM to conduct some experiments. The environment in my server is (2 socket Xeon E5-2658A v3, 128 GB DRAM).

I have learnt about Intel PMEP from some papers (System software for persistent memory, a study of application performance with non-volatile main memory).

It would be very helpful to my research if Intel PMEP is available.

However, I cannot get any useful information about Intel PMEP through googling. So, Is there anyway that I can get access to Intel PMEP?

Thanks a lot!

Optane 900P slowdown after Meltdown and Spectre mitigation

$

I have an Optane 900P in an Asus z370 motherboard with an Intel 8700K CPU. After applying the Microsoft Patch (KB4056892) and the Intel CPU microcode update (ASUS BIOS 0606) to mitigate the security risks from Meltdown and Spectre, the CrystalDiskbench 6.0 4K random reads at Q1 dropped from 290 to 220.

I'm using the latest Intel NVME driver. This specific performance metric is the reason for the Optane purchase, and it's price premium. Does Intel feel that this will be improved with future microcode/driver/OS patches?

optane accelerator disable failure, pc no longer boots

$

I tried to disable my 32Gb optane accelerator on my Aurora r6 and left the RST window running during the first step because it was taking a while to complete. I returned to find that the computer was in the bios screen. I trued to reboot my pc into Windows 10, and it will not boot and always goes to the repair menu. I tried the automatic repair which couldn't find anything to fix. I ran a chkdsk on the X drive which found problems in the uppercase table. I tried to run chkdsk again with the fix option, but I receive an error that the disk (X:) is write protected. I tried running chkdsk X: /f /r /x, but that comes up with the write protect message. I do not know why the the "disable" did not work and I am not sure what to do at this point. I looked over the Optane Memory user manual and installation guide and it doesn't even tell you what to do once the accelerator is successfully disabled.

My main intention was to upgrade the Aurora to an SSD instead of the optane accelerated HDD and I was guessing that I needed to disable the accelerator to do this before I cloned the OS since I couldn't find any information on exactly what to do. So now I have a bricked pc and no good plan on how to recover. Anyone else ran into this problem or have any ideas what to try next?

A few extra notes, in Bios, I can see the drive as a 29Gb M.2 drive, but I have no extra features that I can see that are directly related to this drive. No menus whatsoever that are RST related. I also see that the disk controller is configured as RAID and not AHCI.
